Bespoke WordPress Website Cost UK | Rocking Tech

Quotes for the same WordPress site run from a few hundred pounds to several thousand. Here is what sets the price, and what it costs to run once it is live.

Send the same brief to five UK providers and the prices can land anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand pounds, and every one of them can be justified. A WordPress website is not one product with a single going rate. The figure on a quote is shorthand for decisions someone has made on your behalf: how the site is built, what it can do, and who keeps it running once it is live. Understand those three things and the price stops being a guess.

Why one brief gets five different prices

The biggest single reason two prices differ is how the design gets built. At the cheap end sits a premium off-the-shelf theme, lightly customised to your colours and logo. At the top sits a bespoke theme, designed and built around your brand from scratch. In between sit the page builders, drag-and-drop tools like Elementor, which look cheap up front and carry a catch worth knowing about later.

The UK agency pricing guides I reviewed in 2026 put a freelancer WordPress build at roughly £1,500 to £3,000, and an agency build at £3,000 to £10,000 and beyond. Most small-business sites of five to twenty pages land somewhere around £3,000 to £6,000. What those guides rarely say out loud is that a £2,000 template site and a £5,000 bespoke build are not the same product, even though both get sold as "a WordPress website".

Rocking Tech puts two fixed prices on the table instead of a quote you have to chase. Starter, at £500 + VAT, is a premium template customised to your brand, up to ten pages, live in five working days. Business, at £1,500 + VAT, is a bespoke build with a fully custom design and up to twenty pages. Both are agreed before any work begins, so the figure you hear is the figure you pay. If you are still weighing a template against a bespoke build, that decision is worth its own read.

What moves the number

Past the theme decision, four things push a WordPress quote up or down: the number of pages and templates, any custom functionality and integrations such as a booking system or a CRM link, whether you are selling online, and who writes the words that go on the site.

Content is its own line of cost. Many UK developers bill for loading copy and images separately, and at a lower rate than the build itself, because pouring text into pages is not design work. E-commerce sits at the top of every range I saw, since a shop adds products, payments and shipping on top of everything else. Most quotes fold all of this into one number, which is exactly why two prices for "a website" can be miles apart.

The Business package includes one integration, set up and working on the day the site goes live: online booking, card payments, a mailing-list signup, a CRM connection, a live Google reviews feed, or one-tap WhatsApp enquiries. You bring the content and the branding; Rocking Tech handles the design, the build and the setup. The integration you pick is the one that earns its place for how you win work.

The cost that is not on the quote

The build is a one-off. Running the site is not, and it is the part most quotes stay quiet about.

Hosting for a small-business site runs from a few pounds to a few tens of pounds a month. A managed care plan from a UK agency, covering updates, backups, security monitoring and support, typically sits between £40 and £120 a month. Premium plugin licences renew every year, and so does your domain. On the figures from those same guides, that ownership layer commonly adds somewhere between a few hundred and a couple of thousand pounds across the first year, on top of whatever the build cost.

The useful question is less what a website costs, and more what you are buying, and what it will cost to keep running.

Some agencies fold hosting into their own plans. That is convenient right up until you want to move, and find the site tied to the people who built it. Rocking Tech deploys the finished site to a host in your name, DigitalOcean, Hetzner or similar, and helps you set it up. You manage hosting directly, usually £5 to £30 a month, with no lock-in to us. You own the lot: every file, the design, the code. The Business package also includes 30 days of post-launch support after handover, so you are not on your own the moment the site goes live.

Rocking Tech WordPress packages and what it costs to run them. The build is a one-off: Starter at £500 + VAT (a professional website live in 5 working days, up to 10 pages, premium template customised to your brand, mobile-responsive, SSL, contact form, basic SEO and Google Analytics, 2 revision rounds) and Business at £1,500 + VAT (a bespoke site for bookings, leads and payments, up to 20 pages, fully custom design, one integration, professional SEO on every page, 3 revision rounds, 30 days post-launch support). After handover you keep paying to run it: hosting in your name at around £5 to £30 a month, ownership of all files, design and code, and yearly domain and plugin licence renewals.

Why the cheapest quote can cost the most

A low price usually means a compromise, and with WordPress the compromises are well documented. In its annual security report, the WordPress specialist Patchstack found that 96% of the vulnerabilities disclosed across the ecosystem in 2024 were in plugins rather than the core software. The vulnerable component is almost always a plugin left unpatched, not WordPress itself. WordPress is also the platform attackers target most, in step with how much of the web it runs: in 2018 the security firm Sucuri found it accounted for 90% of the infected sites it cleaned, and later reports keep it at the top.

There is a build catch too. A site put together on a page builder cannot simply be lifted off it. The layouts are tied to the builder's own code, so moving away means rebuilding them page by page. The £500 that skips maintenance, or leans entirely on a builder, has a habit of coming back as a second bill: a malware cleanup, or a rebuild from scratch.

Rocking Tech builds so you are not boxed in. You own the code, the site is not welded to a tool you can never leave, and because it is yours you can look after it however suits you, in-house or with whoever you choose. If you already have a WordPress site and want to know whether it needs a rebuild or just tidying up, that is what a website audit, at £95 + VAT, is for.

What to budget

The honest answer to what a bespoke WordPress website costs in the UK is that it turns on three things: how it is built, what it needs to do, and how it is run afterwards. None of those is a mystery once they are on the table, and the running costs are as foreseeable as the build.

Rocking Tech's version of that answer is two fixed prices, both agreed before a line of work starts. Starter at £500 + VAT to get online quickly and cleanly. Business at £1,500 + VAT for a bespoke site that takes bookings, payments or leads on its own. Either way you walk out owning the site outright, hosted in your own name, with nothing quietly tying it back to us.

The sensible place to start is a short conversation about what the site needs to do, before anyone puts a number on it.
