The expensive mistake

What happens when you skip proper scoping

You brief an agency. They write a proposal based on a 30-minute call. You sign. Three months later the project is 40% over budget, six weeks behind, and the thing they built isn’t quite what you needed – because nobody spent enough time understanding the problem before writing code.

Or worse: you spent £5,000 on Upwork, got something that sort of works, and now you’re stuck with a codebase that no serious developer wants to touch.

This is the most expensive mistake in platform development – and it’s completely avoidable. The sprint covers your business model, go-to-market approach, and competitive landscape – not just the architecture.

How it works

Three weeks. Four touchpoints. One clear answer.

We do the heavy lifting. You invest under 4 hours.

Pre-work

You complete a structured questionnaire. 30–60 minutes of your time. This extracts everything we need to hit the ground running.

Understand

Week 1

90-minute kickoff workshop. We cover goals, constraints, users, and the real problem. For existing apps, we run automated codebase analysis.

Analyse

Week 2

Deep technical work. Architecture design or code assessment. Roadmap drafting. A 30-minute check-in to validate direction early.

Deliver

Week 3

Final report, architecture diagram, and a 60-minute recorded presentation. You leave with a document you can act on immediately.

What you get

Everything in one deliverable

A 15–20 page Platform Discovery Report, plus supporting artefacts.

MoSCoW Requirements

Must-have, should-have, could-have, won’t-have – prioritised and documented.

Architecture Diagram

One page showing how the system fits together.

User Flow Diagrams

System-level diagrams showing how each user type moves through the core application flows.

Technology Recommendation

What to use, what to avoid, and why – with clear rationale.

Phased Roadmap

3–4 phases with timeline and budget ranges per phase.

Build, Buy, or Hybrid

Including “don’t build” if that’s the honest answer.

60-Minute Recorded Presentation

Walk your team or investors through every recommendation.

Risk Assessment

Specific risks with specific mitigations – not generic warnings.

Code Health Scorecard

For existing apps – automated scan plus expert review with fix/refactor/rebuild per component.

I’ve spent a decade building data platforms, with AI integration where it creates real leverage. Through Rocking Tech I’ve delivered platforms for startups, international professional organisations, universities and the NHS. I run every Discovery Sprint personally — you’re not handed off to a junior consultant.

This is for you if

You’re about to commit £25,000+

Budget approved, or just an idea and quotes ranging from £8,000 to £80,000 for the same thing. Either way you want the true scope, and what’s actually worth building, before you sign.

You need a plan someone else has to approve

A board, an investor or a grant panel needs to see a technical roadmap, a costed plan and a risk assessment before money is released. The report is structured with exactly that in mind.

You have a codebase and no one to explain it

Lovable, Bolt.new, Cursor or a freelancer got you part-way and stalled — or your developer left and took the knowledge with them. You need to know what you’re sitting on before you spend more.

This is not for you if

You need a simple website

A brochure site or a landing page is our fixed-price website work, from £500 — a different job with a different process. Discovery is for platforms with users, data and business logic.

Your total project budget is under £25,000

Discovery is designed for £25,000+ platform investments. Below that the fee is too large a share of the build to make sense — a freelancer or an off-the-shelf tool will serve you better.

You want wireframes and a clickable prototype

Discovery includes system-level user flow diagrams, not pixel-perfect designs. Detailed wireframes and interactive prototypes are build-phase deliverables, not part of the sprint.

A free proposal is written to win your project. Paid discovery is written for you – even if the answer is ‘don’t build this.’

Questions & Answers

What is a Discovery Sprint, and what does it cost?

£4,500 +VAT over three weeks. It's a fixed-fee technical assessment that answers what to build, how to build it, what it will cost and in what order - before you commit to a build. It takes about four hours of your own time across three or four sessions.

What do I actually get?

A Platform Discovery Report of 15–20 pages, an architecture diagram, a costed phased roadmap and a 60-minute recorded walkthrough. If you already have an application, a Code Health Scorecard as well. The deliverables also map to what Innovate UK and similar funders ask for.

What if you tell me not to build anything?

Then we tell you. If Airtable and Zapier solve it for £500 a month, that's the recommendation - a normal outcome, not a failed sprint. The job is to protect the £25,000 you were about to spend, not to manufacture build work for ourselves.

Is the £4,500 credited against the build, and can I take the report elsewhere?

Credited in full if you sign a build within 30 days. And the report is yours - written to be portable, so any competent development team can work from it. Most clients don't take it elsewhere, but the option is deliberate.
