What Custom MVP Development Actually Costs in the UK

The median UK contractor charges £575 a day. Most funded startups spend £30,000–£60,000 on a custom MVP. Here is what determines the price.
What Custom MVP Development Actually Costs in the UK
Three quotes land in your inbox for the same custom MVP. One says £15,000. Another says £45,000. A third says £80,000. None of them is wrong – they are pricing different scopes, different team sizes, different levels of risk absorption.

The gap between cheapest and most expensive is routinely four to one on the same brief. These numbers are rarely published openly. Here is the breakdown – anchored on independent UK data – so you can tell whether the figure you have been quoted is reasonable.

The only independent price anchor

Every published "UK MVP costs £X–£Y" figure comes from an agency selling MVP development. Those ranges are directional. The only fully independent, UK-specific, dated price anchor is the developer day rate.

ITJobsWatch – which tracks contractor rates from job adverts across the UK market – puts the median senior full-stack contractor at £575 per day as of July 2026, up 4.5% year on year. London contractor rates ran above £750 in the most recent ITJobsWatch London sample. Outside London, the median sits closer to £500.

Multiply those rates by the people on the project and the weeks of build, and you have the cost before agency margin, tooling and risk premium are added. A small team – two developers, a designer, a project manager – runs roughly £8,000 a week at blended contractor rates. Rocking Tech publishes its starting price – from £25,000 plus VAT – so the day-rate maths is visible before you book a call.

What each bracket actually buys

Matching day rates against Clutch-verified UK agency project values and the published ranges of a dozen UK agencies, four brackets emerge.

£8,000–£15,000 buys a prototype or a single-flow tool. One developer, minimal design, no dedicated QA. Suited to technical founders who can steer the build themselves. Sub-£10,000 typically produces a demonstration, not something you put in front of paying users.

£15,000–£30,000 gets a genuine single-platform web MVP: three to five core features, authentication, payment integration, eight to twelve weeks of build. Lean, but it can go live and collect real user data.

£30,000–£60,000 is where most funded UK startups land. Multi-role access, integrations with CRM and analytics, admin dashboard, proper design, QA and project management. Ten to sixteen weeks. Enough to launch, iterate and raise on.

£60,000–£150,000+ covers multi-platform builds (web plus native mobile), real-time features, regulated data handling, or heavy third-party API work. Full team, longer timeline, higher compliance overhead.

Rocking Tech's custom platform builds start from £25,000 plus VAT – at the boundary between the lean MVP and the funded-startup bracket. Scoped tightly enough to avoid the feature bloat that kills first builds, substantial enough to ship a product that works under real load. Every engagement begins with a Platform Discovery Sprint at £4,500 plus VAT, which pins down exactly what sits inside that budget before a line of code is written.

What moves the number

Five variables shift a UK MVP quote more than anything else.

Feature count is the biggest single lever. A six-feature MVP does not cost double a three-feature one – features interact, and each one adds design, build, test and documentation time across every other feature it touches.

After feature count, the number of target platforms matters most. A web-only MVP is one build. Adding native iOS and Android is close to three separate builds, reduced 25–40% by cross-platform frameworks, but never eliminated.

Integration count adds up quickly. Published UK agency estimates put payment gateway integration at £3,000–£8,000 and CRM connections at £2,000–£6,000. Each external system brings connection work, error handling and ongoing maintenance.

Compliance can front-load significant cost. FCA regulation, NHS data handling or GDPR requirements beyond the baseline have been quoted at £5,000–£10,000 by UK agencies before the core product is touched.

Geography still affects the final number. London rates above £750 a day produce a materially different quote from a regional team at £500, with no necessary difference in quality. Rocking Tech operates from Milton Keynes – regional rates, senior delivery.

The quote is not the total cost

The build price is the largest single line, but it is not the whole number. Annual running costs – hosting, monitoring, error tracking, email delivery, third-party API subscriptions, security patching – add 15–20% of the build cost per year, a ratio widely cited across the industry and commonly attributed to Gartner.

A £40,000 build carries roughly £8,000 a year in maintenance. A £60,000 MVP becomes a £72,000 invoice once VAT lands, and roughly £80,000 in first-year cost once running expenses are included.

A £60,000 build becomes a £72,000 invoice once VAT lands, and roughly £80,000 in first-year cost once running expenses are included.

The larger hidden cost is getting the scope wrong. A 2012 McKinsey and University of Oxford study of 5,400 IT projects found the average ran 45% over budget, with one in six hitting 200–400% over the original estimate.

Flyvbjerg and Budzier, in a 2011 Harvard Business Review analysis, found the same pattern across 1,471 projects: average overrun of 27%, with one in six reaching roughly 200%. The cheapest quote is frequently the most expensive outcome.

The way to contain that risk is to scope properly before committing budget to code. A paid discovery engagement produces a phased specification with budget ranges per phase, so the number you commit to is the number you pay.

Rocking Tech's Platform Discovery Sprint runs £4,500 plus VAT, takes three weeks, and the full fee is credited against the build if you proceed within 30 days. The specification is yours regardless – portable and detailed enough for any agency you work with to build from.
